Introduction

Bills of material and routings are a vital prerequisite for an MRP system to work. For it to succeed the bills and routings need to be structured correctly and the various options provided matched to the operational needs of the company.

To provide an understanding of the importance of bills and routings, and where they fit into the overall system. To ensure that bills of material and routings are created to reflect how the product is built in practice. To suggest ways of controlling bills of material and how to manage engineering changes. To make marketing aware of how BOM's can be used to assist them with forecasting. To stress the importance of BOM accuracy and how to establish your current accuracy level. To make managers aware of how the structuring of the bills of material and routings will affect manufacturing lead times, the level of WIP and the company's responsiveness to customers.

Introduction to bills and routings and where they fit into the overall system. Basic concept of bills, the terms used and the formats available for explosions and implosions. Basic concept of routings & the associated fields. The various types of bills are examined including planning bills, percentage bills, family bills, batch bills, inverted bills, breeder bills, and the concept and affect of phantoms. How to control bills, engineering and method changes, effectively control and the mechanics of implementing changes. Bills of material accuracy are also discussed. The various use of bills of material and routings by the costing system, by MRP, for controlling stores issues, by engineering, and by marketing. The various fields and facilities provided, how they can be applied and the affect and benefits of using them in a modern manufacturing environment.
